A type of fortification introduced along with development of artillery. The name comes from a fortification structure – a bastion. A bastion is a ground brickwork structure (sometimes mixed) pentagon in plan. Particular bastions are connected with a wall through a neck and shoulders. Two bastion heads are advanced against the opponent. Between particular bastions there is a joining wall called a curtain. The first bastions were constructed in the 15th century.
